How to Save Money on Insurance by Combining Plans: An Interview with Albert Turner of Summitt Insurance Agency

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

Summitt Insurance Agency was founded in 1980.  We are family owned & operated with decades of experience in all faucets of the insurance industry.

In general, what should a homeowner have insured?

A homeowner should make sure that the full value of their home is covered.  Whether it is a full replacement cost policy, an ACV or State Value policy.

Your typical Standard Preferred Homeowners policy covers 10% of value for other structures—along with 50-75% for personal property.

Homeowners should also have proper Liability limits to protect them and their assets.  They may also want an Umbrella policy (which is fairly inexpensive) to bring in higher limits of Liability to go above all their primary policies.  Another factor to consider on your homeowners policy is scheduling items.  If a homeowner has valuable items that go at or above $10,000, they should schedule these as an endorsement to their policy for the valuable expensive items that may go above what comes with the standard homeowners policy (i.e. jewelry, art, etc.).

How easy is it to combine these separate policies?

Very easy!  We can do it with separate policies or may be able to combine with one carrier, and many times, may earn additional discounts.  Whichever is best for the customer, we as an independent agent will market all possibilities.

What are some factors that influence the rate on my home insurance policy?

Factors include:

  • Value of home
  • Liability limits
  • Residence address/fire protection class
  • Claims history
  • Overall conidition of property
  • Credit
  • Possibile multi-policy discounts
  • Home safety features

What are some common claims concerns that may arise with my policy?

Some common examples include water or sewage back-up, storm/hail damage, fire, theft, and vandalism.
